At a press conference in Rome, the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development presented Pope Francis' message for the 56th World Day of Peace. The focus of the message is that “no one can be saved alone. Combatting COVID-19 together, embarking together on paths of peace.”

The pandemic has highlighted how vulnerable and interconnected everyone is. If we do not take care of one another, starting with the least, with those who are most impacted, including creation, we cannot heal the world.

Cardinal Michael Czerny explains that the Pope wants the Church to serve the world during the pandemic “as a single human family.” Now, for his message of peace, Pope Francis encourages the faithful to reflect on COVID and its lessons for future peace.

Today, the 2023 Peace Message invites us to ask: What have we learned from COVID? What lessons can we learn from this moment of crisis? What signs of life and hope can we collect despite this difficult time? After all we have suffered, what should be our vision of humanity and of society for the future? What are COVID-time's lessons for peace?

Though COVID restrictions have lessened, Pope Francis' message encourages everyone to look back on how the world has changed and use these lessons to create a better future.

The pandemic is a crisis, and a crisis does not leave people the same. We come out better or worse. We have to do better to fix social injustices and environmental destruction. Today, we have an opportunity to build something different.

The Pope's message of peace for 2023 calls everyone to recognize how the world has changed since the pandemic and put togetherness back at the center.
