Maximino Caballero is the first lay prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy of the Holy See. After two years as Secretary General, Pope Francis appointed him to this new position.
His predecessor, Jesuit Fr. Juan Antonio Guerrero, resigned for personal reasons. The Vatican issued a statement thanking Fr. Guerrero for his service in “putting the economy in order.” In the statement, they highlight his “intense and demanding work.” Among Fr. Guerrero's achievements is reducing the Vatican accounts deficit, especially in the period prior to the coronavirus.
Caballero studied economics and business at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He has a master's degree in business and several years of experience with a major medical company in the United States.
