This is the scene in the Vatican's Paul VI Audience Hall each World Day for the Poor.
In what has become a tradition on this day, the Pope ate lunch with people in need and those who support them. This year, there were 1,300 in attendance.
Pope Francis arrived in a wheelchair, and greeted the head of the Vatican's Dicastery for the Service of Charity, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski.
The Pope's presence drew much excitement among the crowd, and he didn't just stop for a quick greeting; he sat down to eat lunch with them. He even blessed the table.
Despite his knee problems, the Pope continues to maintain a heavy schedule of meetings and events. So far, he has only reduced his pace of activity during his trips.
