After two years of war, the Tigray regional forces and the Ethiopian Federal Army and its allies have finally agreed to a lasting ceasefire.
ANTÓNIO GUTERRES
United Nations Secretary-General
I am pleased to commend the federal goverment of Ethiopia and the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front for yesterday's signing of the permanent cessation of hostilities.
On November 2, the two parties officially signed the cessation of conflict that began in 2020. It has left millions homeless and hundreds of thousands on the brink of starvation. The UN Secretary-General described the ceasefire as “hopeful news in a world churning in turmoil.”

It is a critical first step that paves the way for the unimpeded delivery of life-saving humanitarian aid and the resumption of public services. The human cost of this conflict has been devastating.
In August this year, a 5-month truce ended after violence escalated over who should lead negotiations. General Secretary Guterres encouraged all Ethiopians to seize this recent ceasefire as an opportunity for peace.
This cessation of conflict will allow the UN and other humanitarian aid groups to reach Tigray's 6 million people who have been without help for the last two years.
