On his return flight from Rome, Pope Francis responded to a question about transparency in handling cases of abuse in the Church. The Pope explained that the Vatican continues implementing processes to combat abuse, but acknowledged that not everyone in the Church has the “courage” to address abuses head on.

FULL TEXT:

It is a process that we are undertaking and we are carrying it out with courage, and not everyone has courage; sometimes there is the temptation to compromise, and we are also all slaves to our sins, but the will of the Church is to clarify everything.

For example, I have received two complaints in recent months about cases of abuse that had been covered up and not judged well by the Church: I immediately asked for a new study [of the two cases] and now a new judgement is being made; there is also this, the revision of old judgements, not well made [not given properly]. We do what we can, we are all sinners, you know? The first thing we have to feel is shame, the deep shame of all that.
