Pope Francis usually visits one of the many cemeteries in Rome on November 2. This year, he stayed inside the Vatican.
To commemorate All Souls' Day, the Pope visited the Teutonic Cemetery within Vatican City. This is the burial place of members of the Archconfraternity of Our Lady, an association founded by German Curia members in the 1400s, as well as people of Austrian, German and Swiss descent.
One of the Sisters in charge of the cemetery met Pope Francis at the entrance. She is part of the Handmaids of Christ the Priest.
From his wheelchair, the Pope spent a moment in silent prayer for all the faithful departed before he blessed the graves in the cemetery.
