For weeks now, public catecheses have returned to St. Peter's Square, accompanied with joy. While his knee problems do not allow him to approach the people as much as before, Pope Francis spends more time among the pilgrims in the popemobile.
Once on the podium, the Pope addressed the necessity of self-knowledge.
POPE FRANCIS
To know oneself...this is not easy.
Often we don't know how to discern because we don't know ourselves well enough, and so we don't know what we really want. You have heard so many times: why doesn't that person fix his life? Because he has never known what he wants.
The Pope explained that knowing oneself is an essential step in discernment—it is not enough to have a close relationship with God or frequent prayer.
POPE FRANCIS
At the root of spiritual doubts and vocational crises, it is not strange to discover that there is a lack of harmony between one's spiritual life and one's personal, intellectual, and emotional life.
For this reason, the Pope recommended taking time to examine one's conscience and think through daily decisions. In this way, he said one will understand what truly satisfies the heart.
