Upon entering the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the Pope blessed a unique painting: the Virgin Mary with Kazakh features. It invokes the intercession of the Virgin as “The Mother of the Great Steppe.”
She is credited with saving Soviet deportees from dying of hunger and thirst when Kazakhstan became the regime's go-to place for deportation.
