Cardinal Angelo Becciu attended the beatification of Pope John Paul I in St. Peter's Square. After Mass, Pope Francis greeted him, along with the other cardinals present.
The former number three in the Vatican has resurfaced in public in recent days. Before the beatification, he was seen attending the recent Consistory of Cardinals.
According to Italian media, Cardinal Becciu shared during a private Mass that the Pope had called him to ask that he return to Rome, to participate in the consistory and re-assume his functions as cardinal.
Yet so far the Vatican has only stated that although he is not yet 80 years old, Cardinal Becciu will still not be able to vote in a conclave.
The Italian Cardinal was accused of misusing Vatican funds while working in the Secretariat of State. His trial has continued for over a year, and no sentence has yet been delivered.
