Pope Francis expressed his solidarity with Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, vice-president of Argentina, after a failed assassination attempt.

In a telegram, the Pope called the situation “worrying” and said that he wanted to show his closeness to her in this delicate moment. He also said he prays that in Argentina, social harmony and respect for democratic values may always prevail against all types of violence and aggression.

The two leaders did not have a good relationship when Francis was archbishop of Buenos Aires, but things changed after his election. The Argentine Pope met with the politician several times, four of them in the Vatican.

Their meetings produced images such as these, of Argentina's former president limping due to a sprain.

Are you getting along well?

Very well.

Good.

I saw you have a bad leg.
