After the Angelus, the Pope asked for prayers for Nicaragua. Nine priests have been detained, among them Bishop Rolando Álvarez from the diocese of Matagalpa.
POPE FRANCIS
I am closely following the situation in Nicaragua, involving people and institutions, with concern and sorrow. I would like to express my firm belief and hope that, through open and sincere dialogue, the basis for respectful and peaceful coexistence can still be found.
President Daniel Ortega's government began persecuting the Church after several priests sheltered demonstrators who were protesting the government and being chased by the police in 2018.
The opression in Nicaragua has led several countries and bishops in Latin America to issue communiqués in solidarity with the persecuted Church. Now, Pope Francis has also called for prayers and dialogue from the Vatican.
