Cardinal Marc Ouellet has called a recent accusation of sexual assault leveled against him “false.”
He was accused of inappropriately touching an intern when he was Archbishop of Quebec.
The Canadian Cardinal “firmly denies” that he had ever taken inappropriate action toward the accuser, referred to as “F,” and called the allegation “defamatory.”
He also said that should a civil investigation be opened against him, he would actively participate in order to establish his innocence.
Although no such investigation has been launched, Pope Francis has stated that the Vatican will not be opening a canonical investigation into the Cardinal, since the evidence it has received presents insufficient evidence to do so.
