Pope Francis sends telegram to Cuba after oil tanker explosion in Matanzas

News of the enormous explosion and subsequent fire of an oil tanker in Matanzas, Cuba, has reached the Vatican. 

Its Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, sent a telegram on behalf of the Pope to the President of the Cuban Episcopal Conference, Fr. Emilio Aranguren Echeverría.

In the telegram, Cardinal Parolin communicated that Pope Francis “is closely following the news about the unfortunate accident that has caused a fire and several explosions at the Matanzas supertanker base.”

Currently, one person is confirmed dead and several are missing or wounded. 

The explosion was caused by a lightning strike that triggered a large fire. The Pope sent his prayers 'to the Cuban people and to the families of those affected.”
