Despite knee problems, the Pope made his 37th international trip. It was, as he defined it, a 'penitential pilgrimage' to ask forgiveness for the abuses suffered by indigenous people on the part of Catholics who ran residential schools in Canada in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Some particularly moving moments included meetings between Pope Francis and the indigenous populations and between the Pope and Governor General, Mary May Simons, the first indigenous person to hold that position in the country.
