Instead of using a wheelchair, Pope Francis appeared in the Vatican's Paul VI Audience Hall with a cane. He walked without needing much support from his assistants.
Normally in St. Peter's Square, the case is quite the opposite. The Pope needs a lot of help to walk only a few yards, yet he must get out of the popemobile quickly and walk to his chair, which requires more abrupt and sharp movements.
