The local phases of the ongoing Synod are wrapping up in dioceses around the world, and its secretary general, Cardinal Mario Grech, says he is satisfied with the participation so far, but urges caution in focusing too much on certain topics.

But at this particular stage, I think we will be missing an opportunity if we try to deal with particular issues and forget or neglect the fundamental theme for a Synodal Church.
The central theme of this consultation is what are we going to do? What are we expected to do in order to create this Synod style for the church?
In an interview with Rome Reports, Cardinal Grech said that the synodal process is an exercise in listening in which it is necessary to hear people wherever they are at.

So there is the space room for everybody. And at times, we have also to listen to the silence of the people. So even those who are not so vociferous, we have to listen to them. And listen to that narrative of faith.
Particularly in light of a materialistic mindset, the Secretary General of the Synod emphasizes God's presence in the Church.

It's a spiritual process. And if we don't not invoke continuously the Holy Spirit, we will fail. It is not a repeat a sociological exercise. It's not a debate, it is not a Democratic exercise. It is a discernment process.
This summer, the group putting together the first Synthesis of the synodal process will meet in Rome, with the hope of publishing and sending their report to dioceses around the world in the first week of October.
