On Trinity Sunday, Pope Francis told the twenty thousand pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square that just as the Trinity exists in relation to different persons, individuals cannot live without others.
POPE FRANCIS
The Holy Spirit speaks, but not of Himself. He announces Jesus and reveals the Father. And the Father does not give Himself, but He gives the Son. It is an open generosity, open to the other
Let us think about the names we say each time we make the sign of the cross. In each name, the other is present. The Father, for example, would not be such without the Son. Likewise, we cannot think of the Son alone, but as the Son of the Father. And the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the Father and the Son.
After praying the Angelus, the Pope spoke directly to the peoples and authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.
POPE FRANCIS
Dear friends, with great regret, due to problems with my leg, I have had to postpone my visit to your countries, planned for the first days of July. I truly feel great sorrow for having had to postpone this trip, which means so much to me.
Pope Francis then once again turned his attention to the war in Ukraine and those suffering from its effects.
POPE FRANCIS
The thought of the people of Ukraine, afflicted by war, remains alive in my heart. Let the passage of time not temper our grief and concern for that suffering population. Please, let us not grow accustomed to this tragic situation. Let us always keep it in our hearts. Let us pray and strive for peace.
The pontiff also recalled that Sunday marked World Day against Child Labor.
POPE FRANCIS
Let us all work to eliminate this scourge, so that no child is deprived of his or her fundamental rights and forced or coerced to work. The exploitation of children for work is a terrible situation that affects us all.
A scourge, the Pope says, that has only been made worse due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting economic crisis.
