Pope Francis received Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, in a private audience at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican to discuss the war in Ukraine.
The meetings revolved around maintaining good bilateral relations and the humanitarian and food consequences of the war in Ukraine.
The President of the European Commission gave the Pope a book on the Bauhaus school, an art school in Germany, as well as a photo of a project dedicated to sustainable town planning. Pope Francis in turn presented von der Leyen with a bronze casting with the image of two hands joined together against the backdrop of St. Peter's colonnade together with a woman and child and a boat of migrants. On the casting the words, 'Let us fill our hands with other hands' are inscribed.
POPE FRANCIS
The work you do.
Pope Francis and von der Leyen already met last year, on the 50th anniversary celebrating the diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the European Union.
