Pope Francis has expressed his concern about widespread violence in Sri Lanka, the country he visited in 2015.

There, a devastating economic crisis has sparked mass unrest. On Monday, clashes between police and protesters left nearly a dozen dead and more than 200 injured.

POPE FRANCISCO
I ask all those who have responsibility in the country to listen to the aspirations of the people and ensure full respect for human rights and civil liberties.

During his General Audience, the Pope resumed a series of teachings on old age and said he was disappointed in how grandparents are treated like banks in some parts of the West.

POPE FRANCISCO
Someone said to me, smiling with irony: today grandparents, in this socio-economic situation, are more important because they have the pension. And people think this way.

The Pope said that the worth of grandparents go beyond their financial support. He recalled how important their experience is for grandchildren, who they teach see others tenderly and with humanity.
