Vietnam will soon have a resident representative from the Vatican in the country, and establish an office in Hanoi. The Vatican press office shared the development in a communiqué to journalists.

It is an important step forward for Vietnam and the Holy See, who have not had formal diplomatic relations since the country's communist regime came into power in 1975.

In its statement, the Vatican said it is following Vietnam's Catholic community with interest, noting its special contribution to the hospitals and individuals in need during the pandemic.
