In early March, Pope Francis sent two Cardinals on a special mission: to convey his closeness to displaced people fleeing the war in Ukraine.
After meeting with humantarian aid workers and refugees in Hungary and Ukraine, Card. Michael Czerny shared his impressions of seeing the devastation of war for himself. In a Tweet published on March 10, he writes:
“Reflecting on the difference, the complementarity, between meeting the war via the media, and meeting the war in the displaced and the fleeing.. between the outrage caused by the first, and the compassion generated by the second.”
Meanwhile, the Pope's other representative, Card. Konrad Krajewski, has been spreading a message of hope and encouragement along the Poland-Ukraine border.

He met with refugees and humanitarian workers in the Ukrainian city of Lviv and prayed with volunteers in Poland.
