Pope Francis wants to change the way society perceives the elderly. That's why he will dedicate his Wednesday audiences for the next few months to explaining the role of the elderly in society.
POPE FRANCIS
'The dominant culture has as its sole model the young adult, that is, a self-made individual who always remains young. But is it true that youth contains the full meaning of life, while old age simply represents its emptying and loss? Is that true? Only youth has the full meaning of life?'
The Pope denounced that in a world where productivity is valued above everything else, the role of the elderly is not recognized. He said that there are “care plans, but not projects of existence” to help them fully enjoy life.
Pope Francis wants to mobilize elderly people to share their life experiences with young people.
POPE FRANCIS
'If grandparents withdraw into melancholy, then young people will turn even more to their smartphones. The screen may stay on, but life will die out prematurely'.
The Pope says that helping the elderly and counting on them is not only a good deed, but a challenge for humanity, and that the support of the elderly is important for all generations.
