On February 11, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Catholic Church observes World Day of the Sick.
The Vatican has organized a virtual meeting to reflect on the significance of this day, and Pope Francis has sent this video message to its participants.
POPE FRANCIS
'This time of pandemic is teaching us to look at illness as a global phenomenon and not only an individual one.'
The Pope says today's culture is too individualistic, which leads to inequality including in health care. While some have easy access to care, others barely have access at all. That's why he calls individualism a 'virus' that must be eradicated.
POPE FRANCIS
'To cure this social 'virus,' the antidote is the culture of fraternity.'
He also suggests following the example of John Paul II to find meaning in suffering.
POPE FRANCIS
'St. John Paul II indicated, from his personal experience, this path of searching (for meaning). It is not a matter of closing in on oneself, but on the contrary, of opening oneself to a greater love.'
Pope Francis took the opportunity to praise the work of the tens of thousands of missionaries who dedicate their lives to caring for the sick in the most remote places on the planet.
