After reading a recently released report on the handling of abuse in the diocese of Munich and Freising between 1945 and 2019, Cardinal Reinhard Marx has personally apologized “on behalf of the office of the archbishop to the victims and their relatives for what they suffered in the Church.'
The report alleges the archbishop of failing to act properly in two instances of abuse. As a result, the cardinal repeated his willingness to submit his resignation at the disposal of the Pope.
He submitted his resignation once in June, but Pope Francis did not accept it.
According to the cardinal, there are several 'systemic causes' that led to these abuses, and he has called for a 'reform of the Church's positions and structures.'
The cardinal did not speak on recent accusations levelled against Benedict XVI. The lawyers in charge of the report said that he did not respond properly to four cases of abuse, which the Pope emeritus denies.
