Pope Francis sent a message to the thousands of people affected by the volcanic eruption in Cumbre Vieja, in La Palma, Spain.
The Pope remembered the event at the end of his meeting with the third group of Spanish bishops who are in Rome for their ad limina visit.
POPE FRANCIS
'I accompanied you in those moments and I continue to be with you. And I accompany you now as you rebuild. It's hard, but don't give up. To rebuild means to always take a step forward. It means that defeat does not have the final word.'
The volcano in Cumbre Vieja started erupting in September and didn't stop until December. It was its most destructive recorded eruption, and forced the evacuation of 7,000 people. Some of them hope to return, but the majority will have to rebuild from scratch.
