Pope Francis sent his condolences to the wife and kids of David Sassoli, the President of the European Parliament, following his death.
In the telegram, the Pope mourns the great loss for Italy and the European Union. He remembers the president as a man of faith “animated by hope and charity.”
The Pope, who has met with the president on various occasions, highlights his contributions as a journalist in Italy and his work to promote the common good.
The telegram also underlines how David Sassoli promoted solidarity in Europe “with lucidity and passion, and dedicated himself with particular care to the least.”
David Sassoli was 65 years old and the first president of the European Parliament to die in office.
