Card. Ricardo Ezzati Andrello, the former Archbishop of Santiago, Chile, turns 80 years old on Jan. 7, making him the first cardinal in 2022 to lose the right to participate in conclaves for the election of future popes.
Pope Francis created him cardinal in 2014. The Cardinal welcomed the Pope to Chile during his apostolic visit to the country in 2018.
The cardinal served as Archbishop of Santiago, Chile, until 2019, when he was placed under investigation for allegedly covering up sex abuse involving former priest, Fernando Karadima.
On March 27, 2019, a court in Chile ruled that the Catholic Church had to pay compensation to the three victims of abuse. The ruling named Cardinal Ezzati and his predecessor, and Pope Francis had Ezzati replaced as Archbishop of Santiago.
