The eternal city is in the Christmas spirit.

The city of Rome inaugurated its Christmas tree in the iconic Piazza Venezia. But the boxes under the tree aren't presents.

Instead, they represent the UN's sustainability goals. Each package contains a QR code, which gives information to visitors on how to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.

The project, titled “Let's give the gift of a sustainable city,” was organized with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, which is housed in Rome.

What better gift can we give to our children and grandchildren than a sustainably better future? The gifts under this ‘Tree of Action’ represent the 17 Sustainable Development Goals

The mayor of Rome said the UN's sustainability goals play in important role in defining the fight against climate change.

ROBERTO GUALTIERI
Mayor of Rome

The Sustainable Development Goals are fundamental, they are the basis of the policies that Italy, the European Union and the United Nations have identified to deal with the big challenge of climate change, that is to save the planet and life on the planet.

The display is a visual reminder to Romans about the special time of year, and the measures everyone can take to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.
