Vatican employees and their families gathered in Paul VI Hall for the Pope's annual Christmas address.

Pope Francis dedicated a good amount of time stressing the importance of family and of actively caring for the elderly and grandparents. He even set aside his prepared speech to tell an anecdote about a father who built a separate table for his ageing father, because he would always make a mess while eating.

POPE FRANCIS
'A week later, (the father) comes home and finds his 10-year-old son playing with some wood, nails and a hammer. “What are you making?” “A table, dad.” “But why?” “For you. For when you're old.” Let's not forget that whatever we sow, our children will do the same to us. Please do not neglect grandparents'.

Pope Francis also acknowledged the strain the pandemic has put on the labor market, and he assured employees of the Vatican's continued efforts to make sure no one remains without a job.

The Pope encouraged those present to ask for St. Joseph's intercession in their work and family life, and to follow his example of trusting in God.

After a final blessing, Pope Francis made his way around the room greeting Vatican employees and their families. He seemed especially cheerful as he said hello to the many children in attendance.

He even almost jokingly signed one girl's forehead.

It was a festive occasion for Vatican employees, their families, and of course, their boss, Francis.
