Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Michael Czerny as the interim prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. It is a temporary appointment until a new director is chosen.
The position that was previously held by Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Turkson since four previous pontifical counsels were combined to form the Dicastery in 2016.
Cardinal Turkson said he was leaving his resignation in the hands of the Pope after serving his five-year term at the helm of the Vatican's most visible dicastery.
Pope Francis thanked him for his service in a written statement and announced that as of January 1, 2022, Cardinal Czerny would assume his role.
The Czechoslovakian-born Jesuit from Canada has worked in the dicastery since 2010, and as the undersecretary of the Vatican's Migrants and Refugees Section since 2016.
