After his General Audience, Pope Francis greeted a family he had met at the Mavrovouni refugee camp in Lesbos during his last trip to Greece in early December.
The family was brought to Rome thanks to the Pope's intervention and the work of the Community of Sant'Egidio. The youngest child will undergo surgery at the Vatican's Bambino Gesù hospital. And the Pope is following the situation closely.
-When is the surgery?
-Today we're going to the Bambino Gesù Hospital. Right now.
-And the surgery?
-…the 27th.
-I am praying for you.
With a big smile on his face, the Pope greeted each member of the family one by one. And he didn't let the language barrier stop him from making his signature request.
-Pray for me.
During his trip to Cyprus and Greece, the Pope decided to personally take responsibility for about 50 refugees. At least 12 of them are already in Rome, being supported by the Pope until they become independent.
During his General Audience, the Pope spoke about this eye-opening visit with refugees and migrants in Cyprus and Greece
POPE FRANCIS
'I also noted how only some European countries are bearing most of the consequences of this migratory phenomenon in the Mediterranean area, while in reality, a shared responsibility is necessary from which no country can exempt itself, because it's a matter of humanity.'
Pope Francis took a picture with the family. They are one of many who will benefit from this joint imitative to give people who have been forced to leave their homes a fresh start in Italy.
