Pope Francis received a letter of credence from Peru's new ambassador to the Holy See, Jorge Eduardo Roman Morey. During the exchange of gifts, he made a small promise to the Pope.
-'This left me thinking, and so I made 'Fratelli Tutti.''
-'It will be my inspiration.'
The ambassador, appointed to the Vatican two months ago, thanked Pope Francis for his welcome gift with a joke.
-'This is a library.'
-'Yes, crucial for the one who just got here.'
The Pope gave him eight significant documents from his magisterium, as well as his document on Human Fraternity, and a medal with the seal of his pontificate.
In return, the ambassador gave him an image of Saint Rose of Lima, the first saint of the Americas. The silver frame was carved by Peruvian artisans. He also presented a stole made with alpaca fleece from the Andes and a colorful face mask.
-'This mask is a gift from my family. Although it's no longer used in Italy, in Peru it is still mandatory.'
Peru and the Holy See continue to enjoy good relations between each other. Pope John Paul II visited Peru twice during his pontificate, and Pope Francis did so once, in 2018.
