This fountain dating back to Ancient Roman times has been restored to its original splendor, running water and all. It's part of the environmentally friendly “ParCo Green” project spearheaded by the Colosseum's Archaeological Park.

“For the reopening of this fountain, we chose the motto, 'instar aquae tempus,' which means 'time runs incessantly like water.' This links the fountain to the concept of time, which is another important element of this place, because it is a place of memory, of our past.”
The Fontana delle Pelte is located in the lower part of the Domus Augustana, which was the private section of Emperor Domitian's palace on the Palatine Hill in Rome.

“We have to imagine a peristyle with two sets of columns, with a series of open spaces looking out onto the fountain, which the imperial court used for leisure.”
The restoration of the park's ancient fountains focuses especially on water conservation. In fact, all 173 acres of the archaeological site are irrigated using techniques that minimize water waste.

Geologist
“I think this is important for all archaeological sites around the world because many archaeological sites suffer due to water waste and the resulting shortage of water. On the other hand, when there is too much water, the site can suffer from hydrogeological instability. By reorganizing water use the way we are doing here, we can control the condition, or health, of the landmark. So in a way, this fountain symbolizes the moment in which parks shifted to become more sustainable.”
It's a glimpse into the past and a step toward a future built on sustainability and respect for the environment.
