In a meeting with the Secular Franciscan Order, Pope Francis highlighted the importance of helping those in need, just as St. Francis of Assisi did.

'Open your heart to Christ by living among the people as St. Francis did. Just as he became a “mirror of Christ,” so can you.'
He asked those present to be creative in tackling new forms of poverty, not only economic ones.

'I encourage you to go out to the peripheries, the peripheries that exist out there today, and to promote the word of the Gospel. Do not forget about the poor, who are the flesh of Christ.'
The Secular Franciscan Order is made up of lay people who are committed to living the Gospel by following the model St. Francis.
