This is how Syria’s Christian communities welcomed the Pope’s representative, Card. Leonardo Sandri.
They had been waiting for the Pope for a long time. His visit was planned for 2020 but had to be postponed because of the pandemic.
The Cardinal traveled to Syria to listen to the stories of the people who have been crushed by war for the past decade. Many, like this woman, thanked the Church for the aid it has provided, from scholarships to food.
Card. Leonardo Sandri wanted to communicate the Pope’s closeness to them. He told the Christians that the rest of the Church should “kneel” before them because their experience is a “living martyrdom and an example for the entire Catholic Church.”
