The “Antica Farmacia Pesci” has witnessed Rome's history since 1552 with incredible views of the Trevi Fountain. It was established almost 500 years ago on the Pope's orders.

ALESSANDRA CIOTTI
Pharmacist, 'Antica Farmacia Pesci'.
'This pharmacy was founded in 1552. At first it was located in front of the fountain, which was built after. It used to be a spice shop, an antique pharmacy for poor people from the area.'

The oldest pharmacy in Rome changed its location in the XIX century, but it kept the original furniture, including a mortar from 1552.

Since then, the Pesci pharmacy has fabricated hundreds of therapeutic products used even by the popes, such as the “balsamo inocenciano.” This medicine, made up of natural elements was used to soothe pain due to its relaxing qualities.

'We found an old recipe in an ancient manuscript that mentions how it should be used. It said that you need to take two “scruples” a day. Even though we are not sure what “scruples” meant, it is wonderful to think that they had their own way to use this product and that it was produced in this pharmacy.'

On the shelves, you are able to find ancient medical components such as “dragon blood” or “sacred wood,” used to improve the circulatory and immune system.

Another unique treasure from this place are the two porphyry pots, located on the sides of the counter. This was the material used in the tombs of the pharaohs and emperors such as Napoleon. One of them is linked to General Garibaldi who contributed to the unification of Italy.

'In this pharmacy, we have two vases. When Garibaldi died, an architect that lived in the Quirinal Palace took one of these vases to store the remains of the great Garibaldi. However, Garibaldi ended up getting buried and not incinerated, so the vase was returned.'

The “Antica Farmacia Pesci” is now run by the third generation of the Ciotti family. They hope to preserve the past of this Roman legacy while still serving their patients alongside the Trevi fountain.
