Some 50 people from parishes in three towns in Badajoz, Spain, traveled to Rome to see the Pope and receive his blessing.

The pilgrimage was organized by the priest in charge of these three towns. He says getting people on board wasn’t too difficult, especially after months of isolation because of the pandemic.

“I made the announcement at the parishes, and the people quickly signed up. They didn’t want to miss the opportunity.”

Margarita is one of them. She was able to greet the Pope and is proud of having made it to Rome.

“It was very exciting. I never dreamed that I would one day see the Pope and shake his hand. I never imagined I would one day be so close to the Pope.”

The goal of their trip is both spiritual and historical. They want to learn about the origins of the Catholic Church and to hear Pope Francis’ message firsthand.

“We were really moved. We needed to hear the Pope’s words, and especially what he said about society lacking the freedom that comes from Christ.”

More and more pilgrims are embarking on the journey to St. Peter’s Square, to hear the Pope’s words after so many months marked by the pandemic.
