Pope Francis met with the Biomedical University Foundation of the University of Rome's Campus Bio-Medico.

-Holy Father, we are here to express our unity and to give you the joy of knowing what the Biomedical University Foundation is doing.

The institution promotes the work of the Polyclinic and the Bio-Medico Campus of the University. It prepares future doctors and nurses for their careers, conducts research on diseases such as Alzheimer's, and works with the sick in the emergency room and with patietns suffering from serious illnesses.

The Pope thanked them for the humanity with which they care for the sick.

POPE FRANCIS
'We are living a real throwaway culture: it is in the air we breathe, and we must react against this throwaway culture.'

The Pope praised his hospital's commitment to palliative care and its tireless work during the pandemic.

POPE FRANCIS
'The pandemic has shown us how important it is to connect, to collaborate, to face common problems together. Healthcare, particularly in Catholic institutions, needs and will increasingly need this, to be part of a network, which expresses this togetherness. This is not the time to follow one's own sense of charity in isolation. Charity demands giving: knowledge must be shared.'

The Pope recalled that the Biomedico Campus in Rome was a project of Blessed Álvaro del Portillo, St. Josemaría Escrivá's first successor in the government of Opus Dei. He recalled how Álvaro del Portillo asked them to dedicate themselves fully to their patients, to care for people rather than only manage the sick.
