The Director General of UNESCO presided at a ceremony at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome in which the Pope inaugurated a new cycle of studies launched by the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church.

“The key role of education as a condition of dignity and the emancipation of each person.”

PATRIARCH BARTHOLOMEW
Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople

“A theological chair dedicated to the protection of God's creation at this eminent institution, under the joint auspices of our beloved, very beloved brother in Christ, Pope Francis, and our modesty.”

POPE FRANCIS
One of the scientists, at the meeting we had with them and with religious leaders, this scientist said, “My niece, who was born last month, will have to live in an uninhabitable world if we do not change things.”

The Pope appreciated that the new department will offer courses in different disciplines, in line with an integral anthropology.

POPE FRANCIS
There is no ecology without an adequate anthropology. Without a truly integral ecology, we will have a new imbalance, which will not only fail to resolve problems, but will add new ones.

Before leaving, the Pope asked Patriarch Bartholomew to join him in blessing the participants. Then Pope Francis returned to the Vatican.

Pope Francis has been participating in more high-profile meetings like this one in the weeks leading up to the upcoming climate change conference, which will begin in Glasgow on Nov. 1.
