Many will remember him for delivering the final words before the beginning of the last Conclave, which restricted its attendance to the participating Cardinals.
Now, after three five-year terms, he will no longer serve as the Pope's Master of Ceremonies. Pope Francis has assigned him a new role instead, Bishop of Tortona in northern Italy.
Pope Benedict XVI called him to the Vatican in 2007 to coordinate papal liturgies. He was responsible for ensuring that all of the Pope's liturgical celebrations ran smoothly, no matter the odds.
In 2011, he faced a storm that hit during the Pope's vigil at World Youth Day in Madrid.
