The miracle of a summer snowfall was recreated again this year during Mass in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome on Aug. 5.
The celebration dates back to the year 358, when, according to tradition, the Virgin Mary asked that a church be built at a location she would indicate with snow in the middle of summer.
The shower of white flower petals commemorating the miracle drew pilgrims, tourists and even art historians, from places like Spain, Nigeria, Ecuador and different parts of Italy.
“We heard that flower petals would rain down at the Mass, and we wanted to see it. It seemed very nice.”
“I really think it's another manifestation of the love of Our Lady for us, because Our Lady loves us really, and from time to time, she tries to show that with apparitions and all.”
“This snow in the month of August is also rather fitting with the crazy weather all over Italy right now. I think the recreation of the miracle of snow with flower petals is a tradition that should be experienced and kept alive.”
Some people came with special prayer intentions for Our Lady.
“I'm here to pray for all our families, friends and the world, which is in real need of prayers today. I also want to pray for the Holy Father because he's always asking us to pray for him.”
“I'm praying for family, always for good health, and that's it.”
The celebration of “La Madonna della Neve, “Our Lady of the Snow,” in Rome usually concludes in the evening with another flurry of flower petals outside the Basilica. Last year it was suspended because of the pandemic.
