The Olympic Games have begun, and author Javier Trigo highlights that sports are a gift from God and a tool for people to become better versions of themselves.

These are the key ideas of his latest book, titled, “Dios es deportista.” (God is an athlete.)

“Sports are tools that make us better people. They improve society and can even bring us closer to God. That's the great discovery of Christian doctrine on sports.”

The book is a combination of athletes' life stories and the teachings of the popes.

Javier Trigo says the Church has been rediscovering the value of sports and recommending them as a way to grow closer to God since John Paul II was Pope.

“It has a transformative impact on society and individuals. That transformative power is being discovered and will be used. And that is a good thing.”

For Trigo, it's not just about competing in the big leagues, but about letting sports influence all aspects of life.

“Sports are really about sportsmanship, and we can all live that spirit of sports. Sportsmanship can be a part of daily life: knowing how to win, knowing how to lose when you're with other people, at work, driving, with your family, working as part of a team.”

As the Olympic Games in Tokyo begin, it's important to remember that the Church calls everyone, not just professional athletes, to keep that spirit of sports alive.
