Cardinal Maurice Piat, Bishop of Port-Louis in Mauritius since 1993, turns 80.
Pope Francis made him a Cardinal in November 2016.
Cardinal Piat welcomed Pope Francis when he visited the Indian Ocean island Republic of Mauritius in September 2019. There they celebrated Mass together, and the Cardinal thanked the Pope for his visit.
Cardinal Piat is the President of the Episcopal Conference of the Indian Ocean.
Because of his age, the Cardinal is no longer eligible to vote in the next Conclave. That means that of the 221 cardinals in the College of Cardinals, 123 are eligible to vote.
