Pope Francis is doing well after undergoing surgery for a diverticular stenosis of the colon at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. The medical report says his condition is good overall, that he is awake and breathing on his own. He is expected to remain in the hospital for seven days.
The three-hour surgery performed on Sunday, July 4, included a left hemicolectomy, a procedure to remove one side of the colon and attach the small intestine to the remaining portion.
