Pope Francis is in stable condition and breathing on his own. That's what the Vatican's latest press release says on the Pope's condition.

On Sunday evening, the Holy See press office announced the Pope was admitted to Rome's Gemelli hospital for a planned intestinal surgery. Ten doctors participated in the procedure.

Just before midnight on Sunday, it was reported that the Pope was put under general anesthesia, and that he “reacted well” to the operation.

On Monday morning, the Vatican announced the operation lasted about three hours and entailed removing part of the Pope's colon. It said he was alert, in a stable condition, and breathing on his own.

The Pope will remain hospitalized for seven days in order to convalesce, meaning he could pray the Angelus from Rome's Gemelli hospital next Sunday.
