Soon after the port explosions in Beirut in August 2020, Lebanon fell into a deep economic crisis from which it has yet to emerge.

“The crisis in Lebanon is affecting almost everything, especially medicines, which are now not available in the market.”

That includes medication for chronic illnesses and for treating Covid-19 symptoms.

“We are looking for solutions and to collaborate together.... And to tell the truth, we are in confusion, in total confusion in Lebanon. Total. If you ask some responsible in Lebanon, ‘What about the future in Lebanon?’ he answers, ‘I don’t know.’”

It’s an uncertainty keeping Pope Francis from fulfilling his wish to visit the Middle Eastern country, which Fr. Abboud explains he can’t do if Lebanon fails to form a government. But despite everything, Fr. Abboud says Lebanon continues to be a model of unity for the world.

“Lebanon is a message for all the world, where religions can be together. Because in our village, we are Christian and Muslim together. In our schools, we have many schools in Lebanon, Catholic schools, but where we can see the Muslim and the Christian together.... So this is our identity, our mission, our message for all the world.”

It's with this identity and spirit of inclusion that Caritas serves Lebanon's most downtrodden communities. The organization oversees 10 primary health and social service centers, nine mobile clinics, many shelters and several educational, humanitarian and development centers throughout the country.
