During the Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis explained the doctrine of the mystery of the Blessed Trinity, which teaches that God is three distinct persons in one divine being.
POPE FRANCIS
'Love is essentially a gift of self, and in its original and infinite reality it is the Father who gives Himself by generating the Son, who in turn gives Himself to the Father, and their mutual love is the Holy Spirit—the bond of their unity. It is not easy to understand, but all of us can live out this mystery'.
The Pope explained how, in the New Testament, Jesus reveals the mystery of one God as three persons.
POPE FRANCIS
'Jesus showed us the face of God as the merciful Father; he presented Himself, true man, as the Son of God and Word of the Father, the Savior who gives his life for us; and he spoke of the Holy Spirit who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Spirit of Truth, the interceding Spirit'.
He asked Catholics to be united in diversity so as to reflect the image of the Trinity.
Pope Francis then recalled the three Red Cross nurses who were martyred in the Spanish Civil War and who were beatified this weekend.
POPE FRANCIS
'They were dedicated to taking care of those wounded in war, without abandoning them at the moment of danger; they took risks, and they were killed in hatred of their faith. Let us praise the Lord for their Gospel witness. A round of applause for the new Blesseds'.
The Pope also announced that he has called together leaders of Christian communities in Lebanon to pray for the country's reconstruction. He closed by asking for prayers for Colombia, and encouraging Christians to always keep a copy of the New Testament nearby, since it provides strength during life's difficult moments.
