To celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between the European Union and the Holy See, a Vatican representative is celebrating a special Mass for each European country in Rome. Spain invited Cardinal Luis Ladaria to celebrate its Mass, who took the opportunity to discuss how to build a shared home.

CARD. LUIS LADARIA
Prefect, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
'A house that breaks down barriers, that is welcoming to all. Only in this way will Europe be faithful to its true roots, in which the Christian faith plays a very important role.'

In the last half century, Europe and the Holy See have developed a close relationship.

CARMEN DE LA PEÑA
Spanish Ambassador to the Holy See
'Our main achievement has been walking together on a number of very important issues to achieve a more just and more peaceful world.'

ALEXANDRA VALKENBURG-ROELOFS
EU Ambassador to the Holy See
'Multilateralism, the values we share such as human rights, support for peace and security and climate change. I think both the Holy See and the European Union have strong positions on these issues.'

For the past year, European countries have been celebrating Masses in churches throughout Rome to which they have historic ties. The celebrations will last until June 27 and feature concerts and guided visits to the chosen sites.

Spain designated its Mass to be held in San Pietro in Montorio, which was rebuilt by the Catholic monarchs of Spain King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella at the end of the 15th century.
