On Sunday, May 16, the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, Pope Francis will celebrate Mass with the community of Myanmar living in Rome.
Pope Francis visited the country in November of 2017. And since the coup in February he's followed the crisis in Myanmar very closely. Violence in the country has been escalating since the beginning of the year.
POPE FRANCIS
March 3, 2021
I would like to draw the attention of the authorities involved to the fact that dialogue prevails over repression, and harmony over discord. I also appeal to the international community to ensure that the aspirations of the people of Myanmar are not stifled by violence.
Pope Francis also asked “that the path toward democracy taken in recent years by Myanmar be resumed through the concrete gesture of the release of the various political leaders imprisoned.”
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m., Rome time, at the Altar of the Chair of St. Peter in St. Peter's Basilica.
