Pope Francis expressed his concern about rising tensions in eastern Ukraine. He denounced the many cease-fire violations that have multiplied in recent months, and noted with concern the increasing military activity in the area.

POPE FRANCIS

And this is a sad thing. Please, I deeply hope that the increase in tensions may be avoided. That, instead, actions to promote reciprocal trust and favor reconciliation and peace be taken. They are so necessary and so much desired.

Because of the pandemic, the Pope has long been absent from the window of the pontifical apartment where he typically makes his Sunday address.

POPE FRANCIS
I'll tell you one thing, I miss the square when I have to pray the Angelus inside the library. I am happy to be here, thank God. And thanks to you for being present. To the boys of the Immaculata, who are good. And to all of you, I wish you a good Sunday. And please don't forget to pray for me. Enjoy your lunch and see you next time.

The last time Pope Francis looked over St. Peter's Square from his window was on March 14. When the health crisis worsened once again in Italy and in Rome, the Pope was forced to preside over all religious ceremonies virtually, including during Holy Week.

This was the first Regina Coeli he recited in St. Peter's Square since Easter began.
